In January of 2009, I presented a paper at the Society for Historical Archaeology Annual Conference in Amelia Island, Florida. It was a general paper, placed in the Contributions to New World African Diaspora Archaeology. Below is a video of the Keynote presentation, along with taped audio of the presentation itself. If you would like a copy of the presentation, please contact me, and I can send you a .pdf of the presentation. If you use it, please, cite it and let me know where you’re using it. I would be curious to know if  this project is worth while.

Abstract:
In 1840, Dr.John Brome returned to St. Mary’s City, Maryland, and dramatically reorganized his late stepfather’s estate. A new manor home and a row of slave quarters highlighted his manipulation of space to enhance power and control over the landscape and its enslaved inhabitants. By the Civil War, he had one of the largest plantations in St. Mary’s County, owning nearly 60 slaves. Now forced to pay for his laborers, Dr. Brome began to sell off his land, attempting to diversify his holdings beyond agriculture. Circa 1880, only one of the slave quarters was still inhabited. Historic St. Mary’s City has excavated two of the quarters, in addition to completing extensive archaeological survey at the plantation. This paper will present a model developed from the archaeological survey and historical records to aid in understanding how the lives of Dr. Brome’s slaves changed during the transition from slavery to freedom.
