I have held numerous leadership positions, including as a team captain, organization president, project leader, manager, coach, or coordinator. Each experience has allowed my leadership capacity to grow and evolve. I consider myself to be a passionate leader, who believes that the best way to motivate is on an individual basis. Every person has their own style, and responds to different types of motivation; the most important element of a leader is the ability to pinpoint who will respond to what form of motivation. For some that requires a strong hand, for others it requires encouragement and praise.
Leadership is pivotal in the type of work I hope to pursue. Researchers must be able to motivate and encourage their assistants and fellow colleagues. As an administrator, one must be able to rally others around common causes and initiatives. As a coach, players must trust you and your decisions in order for the team to improve. As a teacher, leadership is necessary to motivate and inspire students to learn. As a person, leadership is pivotal: no one wants to take a backseat to their own life. I expect to be placed firmly in the driver seat of my own journey.
