This paper was presented at the 43rd Annual Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology, presented by the Society for Historical Archaeology, on January 9, 2010 at Amelia Island Plantation in Jacksonville, Florida. It was presented by myself, Terry Brock, and discusses the changing landscape at St. Mary's Manor and Plantation in St. Mary's City, Maryland, during the transition from slavery to freedom. In particular, it focuses on the negotiation of power between the plantation owner and the African American communities that live there.
